UNESCO and China Provide Critical Medical Aid to HIV-Positive Orphans

UNESCO and the Chinese government have embarked on a humanitarian mission to deliver surgeries and free medical screenings to HIV-positive orphans residing at the Compassion Orphanage.

This joint endeavor seeks to offer vital healthcare and assistance to some of society's most at-risk individuals.Mother-to-child transmission (MTCT) of HIV is a major public health issue, especially prevalent in sub-Saharan Africa. If no preventive measures are taken, an HIV-positive mother has a 15% to 45% chance of passing the virus to her child during pregnancy, childbirth, or breastfeeding. 

However, with proper antiretroviral therapy, this risk can be reduced to less than 5%.

Despite advancements in medicine, the stigma attached to HIV/AIDS remains a significant hurdle in both preventing and treating the illness. Many, including children, suffer from discrimination and social isolation due to their HIV status, which often leads to delays in obtaining treatment and a lack of essential support systems.

At the event, Edmond Mouakala, UNESCO's ambassador to Ghana, stressed the importance of healthcare and education for affected children. "HIV and education are vital for these children. Providing them with proper care is crucial for their growth and development," he stated.

The Compassion Orphanage's CEO expressed deep appreciation for the initiative, noting its profound effect on the children's lives. "We are incredibly thankful for this initiative.

 It has a significant impact on the children and the entire community at Compassion Orphanage," he said.Chinese doctors leading the medical interventions highlighted the urgent need for timely and adequate healthcare. "This medical intervention is crucial to enhance the health and well-being of these children, offering them a better chance at a healthy future," one doctor explained.
